Strawberry Picking Memories to Last a Lifetime

strawberry picking, strawberries

Growing up in the 80s, at least where I grew up with my grandparents, I didn’t do many of the things my kids do today … there was no Xbox, no cell phones I did everything except talk on, and certainly no hoverboards (we did, however, have Skip It and I sucked at that). The one thing we did have was the outdoors and I did all sorts of things, but my all-time favorite was eating picking strawberries from the two different patches we had planted in the backyard. While I don’t have my own strawberry patch … or backyard for the matter … I still love to go strawberry picking, so it’s always such a treat to go with the kids at this time of year.

The patch has been open for a while, so as we grabbed our boxes and started to make our way towards the field, I think we both went in with trepidations, feeling like it was going to be slim pickins … we couldn’t have been more wrong! As we made our way down our chosen rows, we ran into gorgeous strawberry after gorgeous strawberry and before I knew it, we both had packed to the brim boxes and I was $28.67 lighter in my wallet, but you can’t put a price tag on those memories. Expect many, MANY strawberry recipes to come.

Unfortunately, Nathan is having pretty bad allergy problems at the moment, so he and C stayed home to save the world on the Xbox One, while V and I searched for our strawberry picking treasure. I so cherish these times with her. Time while she still has time for me. I always thought by the time she reached these years she would find me to be “uncool” and want to do everything except hang out with me, but I was wrong. She adores me as much as she always has and I will continue to roam the strawberry fields with her until she decides otherwise.

Strawberry picking typically starts in January and ends late May and is open every day, weather permitting. When planning any outdoor activity it is best to call before you come!
