Meet Roketa, the Face Behind the Blog

Roketa is the Content Creator behind Socially Acquainted, a Charlotte food, micro-travel, and parenting blog. She’s a mom of 2 teenagers preparing for college while living her best thirty-something life and creating herself along the way.

Roketa is a northerner, from Maine, who moved to Charlotte, NC in 2001 and stayed … partially because her parents followed her down here, but mostly because she became pregnant with her son.

When she started her blog in March of 2017, it was a means to jot down her families lives, but as she immersed herself further into the blogging community and started attending conferences, she realized she wasn’t seeing a lot of herself or family in the blogs and social media that she was viewing. She saw lots of pretty feeds, but they weren’t filled with faces or families, that looked like hers; they all seemed very picture perfect, the quintessential families with a mom, dad, 2.4 kids, and a dog … that’s not hers. In regular media when she saw a single parent family, especially one of color, it was rarely, if ever, in a positive light … that’s not hers either.

She decided she wanted to not only document their lives, but she also wanted to expand upon what she put out because she wanted to break single mom stigmas, especially those that surround ones of color. She wanted to show you can have nice things through budgeting and being thrifty with your purchases. That you can see the world without excuses. That you can immerse yourself in culture and be philanthropic regardless of circumstance.
